BA.2 constitutes 11.6% of coronavirus variants in U.S., says CDC

The Omicron sub-variant BA.2 was estimated to make up 11.6% of the coronavirus variants circulating in the United States as of March 5, stated the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Scientists are looking at a surge in cases due to the BA.2 sub-variant, which is fast spreading across parts of Asia and Europe. The daily infections in the U.S. have started to fall in recent weeks, with COVID-19 guidelines for masks, including in schools, being eased. Other Omicron sub-variants circulating since December include BA.1.1 and B.1.1.529. BA.1.1 now constitutes around 73.7% of the circulating variants, while B.1.1.529 makes up 14.7% of the variants. According to the CDC, BA.2 made up 6.6% of the circulating variants in the country in the previous week… (Reuters, March 8, 2022)
